Turn Drab to Wow!
When Brenda Fitzpatrick and John Tomassini purchased their 21-year-old home, they knew they’d be carrying out a kitchen renovation soon. “Prior to the renovation, we didn’t have any layout space for the stove and we were constantly manoeuvering into each other when cooking or looking for something,” said Brenda.
The couple has lived in Oxford Mills, located 10 minutes from Kemptville, for the past two years. They went to the Ottawa Home Show last March looking for information on kitchen renovations. “We knew when we purchased the home that a kitchen renovation was a must,” said Brenda. “The original kitchen’s design was odd, outdated and cramped. The green countertops had to go!”
They needed dramatic changes to get exactly what they envisaged, and were “really impressed” with Westend Bath and Kitchen. “I think we were very lucky to have found Westend designer Sarah Stott and contractor Dave Edwards,” she said. “Sarah was very helpful in assisting us throughout the planning stages with suggestions for flooring, cabinets and hardware. “Brenda and John were a pleasure to work with!” said designer Sarah Stott. Their requests were to have a larger, more functional, eat-in kitchen with a lot of storage. “Their renovation was a complete gut, removing all of the flooring for the kitchen, dining room and living room,” said Sarah. “The original kitchen was in much need of an upgrade; I couldn’t believe the out of place island that was originally installed. We changed the layout to create a large eat-in kitchen. “We closed in unwanted doorways, relocated most of their appliances and installed a substantial island with a prep sink,” continued Sarah. “We chose a white shaker door for the cabinets and a dark Cambrian quartz for the countertop.
The contrast in colour really makes the space shine, especially with their gorgeous stone mosaic backsplash. When it came to choosing finishes, our personal styles were very similar. I love the simplicity of a traditional kitchen, yet with a contemporary flair.” John and Brenda are now thrilled to be able to use the kitchen “without bumping into each other.” “Ninety-nine per cent of the renovation was done in three weeks,” said Brenda. “It was a very pleasant experience from beginning to end.
Dave and his assistant Jim were here on time, every day, helpful and very professional.” One of their favourite parts of the kitchen is the island. “This has become the focal point of the kitchen with family and friends gathering for food and drink,” she said. “The comments have all been very positive. The quartz countertops have been popular as well as the kitchen design. The kitchen is definitely brighter and inviting.”
“None of this could have been completed without our amazing contractor, Dave Edwards,” said Sarah. “He is just one of Westend’s outstanding, efficient and reliable contractors. I hope Brenda and John enjoy their kitchen for years to come.”
